Milton Mahoney, Rachael Weber winners of SD57 byelection

PRINCE GEORGE – The suspense is over, with 1,137 votes counted in Prince George, and 114 in Mackenzie for the School District 57 Trustee byelection.

Milton Mahoney was declared the winner in Prince George with 293 votes, narrowly beating former CUPE President Brian Trotter with 281, and former Federal NDP Candidate Audrey McKinnon who received 267 votes.

UNBC Associate Nursing Professor Shannon Freeman received 221 votes, while Andrew Burton notched 75 votes for 5th place.

In Mackenzie, Rachael Weber took the large majority of the vote beating David Szsucko 76-38 in the two-way race.

“This is really exciting,” said Weber, who spent the evening surrounded by family as she awaited the results.

“I’m most looking forward to getting to work to fix the issues that plague SD57 and to build back the relationships with First Nations communities that have been hurt in the past,” said Weber.

Mahoney ran his campaign on “keeping politics out of the classroom,” with hopes to dig deeper into the recent events of School District 57.

“Let’s raise the bar, not lower it,” said Mahoney. “Stick around, this is going to get interesting.”

Mahoney said he looks forward to giving the students in this school district the best education possible, and listening to ideas other candidates have pushed forward as well.

Mahoney and Weber congratulated the other candidates on successful campaigns, and thanked voters for their support as they prepare for their first regular Board of Education meeting later this month.
