PRINCE GEORGE — It was a successful weekend for both University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) basketball teams in Kelowna.

The men’s Timberwolves team swept their weekend set against the University of British Columbia (UBC) Okanagan Heat. UNBC had a 12-0 rally at the end of the fourth quarter, and a three pointer from Spencer Ledoux at the buzzer to beat the Heat 79-77 on Friday (Jan. 21). On Saturday (Jan. 22), Ledoux has another stellar performance, leading UNBC with 28 points on 13-for-16 shooting in a 98-83 win.

“He is incredible. He is a huge part of our team. I call him Baby Jokic. He gets shaking and he gets buckets. He can turn over either shoulder. So efficient,” UNBC’s Tyrell Laing said postgame. “It helps us because it brings a different dynamic to our team. A post player that can go get us a bucket. He is unstoppable right now.”

The women’s Timberwolves basketball team couldn’t sweep their weekend, but they did leave UBC Okanagan on a high note. Following an 82-65 loss on Friday – in which Alina Shakirova scored 21 points – UNBC had a team effort with four players scoring double digit points in a 76-67 win.

“They shot it well. Yesterday and today, that was difficult to contain. A couple players really gave us trouble,” Emma vanBruinessen, who had 12 points and eight rebounds on Saturday, said. “We stuck to UNBC basketball and managed to do enough. Having lost both our games since Christmas, this one was a big deal. The rest of the semester will be tough, against some really good teams, so this win is something we hope to build on next weekend and the rest of the year.”

The men’s T-Wolves team improved to 4-7 on the Canada West season, good for fourth in the West Division. The women improved to 5-6 and also sit fourth in the West.

Both UNBC teams host the University of Fraser Valley on Jan. 28 and 29.
