Province announces ICBC customers to get $110 rebate

VICTORIA— Update: The BC Liberals have responded to the announcement this morning. They say that a one-time payment does nothing to help with “sky-high” prices.

The Liberals say they have been calling on the NDP to use already existing carbon credits from the BC Climate Action Tax Credit, to provide an enhanced rebate that would do more to help low and middle-class British Columbians.

“We’re all facing pain at the pumps right now, but with life more expensive than ever under the NDP, lower and middle-income British Columbians are spending more of their wages just to get to and from work or take the kids to soccer practice,” said MLA Peter Milobar, BC Liberal Finance Critic. “With a growing number of people struggling to make ends meet and transit costs going up in the Lower Mainland, the fact that a single parent working two jobs and driving a Honda Civic is getting the same one-time rebate as a Tesla owner is ridiculous.”

Previous: The province announced this morning that ICBC will be providing a one-time relief rebate of $110 to customers with a basic auto insurance policy in February. Commercial customers will be eligible to receive a rebate of up to $165.

“People are facing increased costs through no fault of their own, but as a chain reaction that started with Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine,” said Premier John Horgan. “As a result of our work to fix ICBC, we’re in a position to put money back in people’s pockets to help a little with these increased costs.”

Eligible ICBC customers can expect to receive their rebate in May if they are registered for direct deposit with ICBC or as a refund to their credit card. All other customers will receive cheques in June.
