StatsCan reports that up to 40 per cent of Canadians suffer from allergies to pollen or grass and one-third have some form of pet allergies. But how do you know that you have allergies? What are the symptoms?

“The usual symptoms of seasonal allergies are getting a stuffy nose, itchy and watery eyes although it can vary widely from person to person,” Dinelle continued.

While the symptoms of seasonal allergies are not debilitating they can be very annoying, even embarrassing to some. So what can you do to help reduce the symptoms?

“There are a few non-prescription products for allergies, there are allergy pills called antihistamines and we can definitely recommend that being a pharmacist. There are also some nasal sprays that a person could use as well,” said Dinelle. “Two different types, one that can relieve a stuffy nose and one that can help longer-term to relieve the problem of nasal allergies.”

For some, the symptoms can be more severe. headaches, coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath can cause work and leisure to be impossible. Off-the-shelf products may not be enough.

“If someone tries nonprescription medication and it is not being successful for them they should talk to their doctor because there are some prescription-strength antihistamines that may be a little bit more potent and stronger for certain individuals,” said Dinelle.

When it comes to minimizing the effects of seasonal allergies avoidance and medication are your two best options. Sleep with your window closed, brush any pets you may have on a regular basis and consider wearing a dust mask while outside.
