PRINCE GEORGE- The minimum wage in British Columbia rose to $15.65 per hour today, a 45-cent jump that will impact up to six percent of employees in the province.

The change is expected to be welcomed by some, but not all. The CEO of the Chamber of commerce has his concerns.

“This is good news, certainly that workers are getting paid a fresh wage,” says Todd Corrigall. ” We are seeing significant increases, inflationary increases right now. So it is pretty challenging for everybody. What we need to do is get to a place where not everything is rising simultaneously.”

After years of unknowns during the pandemic, Todd hopes for a little more economic stability in the coming years.

In the case of the student body, which makes up a large demographic in Prince George. The bump in the minimum wage is needed to afford to live and is being welcomed with open arms.

“Obviously, any increase in the minimum wage is a good thing,” says Sloane Zogas, who attends UNBC for Political Science. ” Working four part-time jobs right now was definitely needed, especially with the price of living right now and gas and that type of thing.”

The minimum wage has risen every year since 2018, totalling more than a three-dollar raise.
