PRINCE GEORGE – School District 57 Trustees voted on a new capital plan on Wednesday night including a proposal for improvements for DP Todd Secondary School.

For a number of years, local Trustees have been advocating for improvements to the school in the Heritage area of Prince George. The number of students attending has continued to grow and reach capacity with portable classrooms piling up behind the building and little to no renovations funded for the main school building.

Trustees proposed two solutions to the Ministry of Education to improve the learning environment for students.

One option a complete replacement for the school totalling just over $100m, while an expansion and renovation project was a second option slated to cost $66m.

The sheer cost of a complete school replacement led those at the Board of Education table to consider an alternate solution.

β€˜The cost to build is huge and everything has inflated,” said Sharel Warrington, Chair of the SD57 Board of Education.

For reference, the replacement of Shas Ti Kelly Road Secondary School came at a cost of just under $45m, while back in 2010 a new Duchess Park Secondary came in just under $40m.

In addition the Board of Education put forward three proposals for Elementary School expansions in Prince George including adding four classrooms, a multi-purpose room, and childcare space.

Those expansions would occur for just over $6 each at Springwood, Edgewood, and Malaspina Elementary Schools. All of those schools are operating at or near capacity with major housing development nearby.
