PRINCE GEORGE—You don’t have to be Arnold Schwarzenegger or Ronnie Coleman to pick up a dumbbell. Strength training should be an important part of your routine at the gym.

“Strength training. We also call it resistance training involves exercises that are designed to build our strength and endurance by lifting weights while we can use our body weight as resistance,” said Simi Mann, Personal Trainer at College Heights Fitness.

Strength training does a lot for the body, improving joint health and increasing bone density.

“I guess strength training is the most important component of overall fitness. It’s improved our quality of life and also enhanced our ability to do our everyday activity,” said Mann.

Lifting barbells is not the only way to improve strength. Body weight exercises like push-ups, chin-ups and burpees are great ways to build muscle. Resistance bands are also fantastic tools to use.

“Especially if you are an athlete, then it is the key factor to build your athleticism and enhance your performance. So the benefits of strength training include it increase your muscle mass bone density, flexibility, balance, and it also assists in your sleep and better mood,” said Mann

There are some dangers in strength training. Lifting too heavy or with bad form can result in injuries from pulled muscles to slipped discs to broken bones. So it is important to practice with someone who knows what they are doing when starting out. Good form is the key to good results.
