College Heights park concerns

PRINCE GEORGE – At the beginning of this week, City work crews began removing trees to access a pond in College Heights. The tree removal agitated one resident who lives near the park.

McGill park is one of the many neighbourhood parks where you can find a place to rest and enjoy the outdoors.

However, when city crews moved in to clear an area to access a pond, it raised the hackles of longtime resident Grant Whebell when the city began to remove trees.

According to Grant Whebell, the City did not notify residents of the work, and he is also concerned there may be other work planned that residents are unaware of.

Councillor Garth Frizzell says within McGill Park, three ponds collect water; over time, these ponds collect sediment and must be cleared out.

“It’s time to clear the ponds out now that needs to be done. So we worked with the provincial government and the government of Canada. We got funding for this and we looked for the most efficient access and the safest access for our workers so that that work could be done. Now, what that means is that the trail had to be widened, and the remediation work will be done after we’ve cleaned out those ponds.”

Councillor Garth Frizzell understands the concern of residents and agrees better communication from the city could have been done.

As crews work, access will be limited. Work is expected to be completed by the end of August.
