Temporary ban on the import of handguns coming to Canada

PRINCE GEORGE- It has almost been a week since the federal government announced a temporary ban on the import of handguns in Canada, an action Todd Doherty completely misses the mark.

“They haven’t given the tools for our frontline officers, whether it is the police agencies or border agencies, to be able to stop these firearms from coming across and getting into the hands of criminals,” says Doherty, the deputy shadow minister for national defence. If they truly wanted to make a difference, they wouldn’t have skirted the parliamentary process and worked with all parties that want to make our country and community safer.”

In the announcement, one of the new rules outlined will mean that businesses will no longer be able to import handguns into Canada, ultimately affecting local shops.

“I would say that this is about 15% of my business,” says Cassandra Premack, the owner of K.K.S Tactical Supplies. “We don’t get an email saying This is coming. We don’t have dates ahead of time. We see the same news releases everybody else is.”

Those in support believe that this ban will make Canada a safer country for citizens to live in.

“Once you have guns in wide circulation in the community. It isn’t a question of mental health. It isn’t a question of whether you’re good or bad. It is a question of the availability of guns and your immediate impulse to use them for whatever purpose,” said Annie Booth, a Professor at UNBC. “If you ban, control, and restrict the access to guns, you will not have as many shootings, and in my opinion.”

The ban will immediately come into effect on August 19th, with full legislation expected to be passed.
