Rain keeps Hasler Flats wildfire behaviour low

CHETWYND — Approximately two millimetres of rain kept fire behaviour on the Hasler Flats wildfire burning 30 kilometres southwest of Chetwynd.

The 40 firefighters battling the blaze are challenged by rocky conditions and large trees that present a risk of injury. Despite that, the BC Wildfire Service says the crews made good progress Saturday (August 13) and the fire is now surrounded by fire retardant and natural features like rock bluffs.

Sunday (August 14), they plan to continue direct attack along the east flank while they mop up on the other three sides. The service says there are 12 pieces of heavy equipment battling this fire, but those numbers will decrease as they finish their work on the fire in the coming days.

The Prince George Fire Centre says lightning and strong winds are expected in Northern B.C. throughout Sunday, which could lead to new wildfire starts. They ask anyone who spots a fire to report it using *5555 or through the BC Wildfire Service app.
