PRINCE GEORGE – For the past few days, sockeye salmon have been spotted swimming in one of the city’s urban creeks. Many people are excited, but fish experts are concerned.

“When we see them in a little feeder creek like McMillan, which traditionally holds salmon, it’s not necessarily a good thing here because the sockeye, they’re stressed out. They’re taking little offshoots from being held up at Big Bar and Hell’s Gate all those impediments that are further down the line.”

Salmon sightings are considered an exciting sign, especially at McMillan Creek Park, once known as the spawning grounds. The salmon swimming in the Nechako River near McMillan Creek started their freshwater journey in the Lower Mainland.

The high water in the Nechako river makes watching the sockeye much easier with many salmon passing through expected to travel a few more hundred kilometres.

The sockeye salmon run is expected to end in the next two weeks, and there is no opening for sockeye in the region.
