4-H knocks it out of the park at BCNE

PRINCE GEORGE – A major part of the BC Northern Exhibition each year comes courtesy the various 4-H clubs in the city. And the displays are varied.

“We have honey bees, gardening, foods, photography, and then we segue to the other aspect where we go from the smallest animal which is poultry or a little baby bunny all the way up to swine, sheep, cattle as well as horses,” explains Liz Ramsay, one of the organizers of the 4-H events at the BCNE.

In the sheep-shearing shed, kids are showing off many hours of work.

“They’re often portrayed as the easiest project,” explains Amy Larson, who is showing her second sheep. “Until you have to groom them and that is not easy. There are hours and hours that go into grooming.”

“We did a ewe project,” explains Martinus van Zyl. “You birth a lamb, you raise it and then you go through that ewe birthing a lamb. It gives the ability to see how everything happens.”

That is exactly what 4-H is about, life sciences.

“What we want to be able to teach them is, not only do you get a project and you raise that project, how do you carry on, year over year,” says Ramsay. “How do you make the investment in yourself doing the project?”

In Amy and Martinus’ cases their sheep with be sold at market this weekend.

“He’s gonna be in a grooming show as well as a showmanship project,” says van Zyl. “And then Saturday, he’s going to the auction.”

“There’s lots of sheep this year,” says Larson. “I think there’s around 30 market sheep. There are a lot of market sheep. There were really good prices last year because it was our first year back.”

So, when you head to the BCNE this weekend, make sure to head to the Agricultural sheds to take in all the livestock.
