Strike causes B.C to ration liquor

PRINCE GEORGE- The BC General Employees Union went on strike earlier this week. Now, the Alliance of Beverage Licensees of B.C. says government officials had a message for its customers today.

“Customers will notice that B.C. liquor stores and government liquor stores are limiting customers to only having three individual products per day,” says Jeff Guignard of Able BC. “Beer is exempt. So if you’re a beer drinker, you won’t have any issues accessing that.”

These rations will also impact Bars and restaurants.

“The strike is slowly depleting inventory of mostly spirits and import wines,” said the Owner of The Black Clover, Troy Mckenzie. “We’re going to run out of stock. We must change gears and find things that may not be the same.”

A change that could lead to a Price increase for different beverages.

“There might be a price change because we’re getting a premium grab spirit as opposed to import vodka, for example,” said Mckenzie.

Able BC says there is only one way to fix this issue.

“This is quite serious now, and it is time for both sides to find the adult in the room, help to get back to the table and negotiate a deal,” said Guignard. “They are punishing the entire British Columbia liquor industry, the 200,000 people we employ and all those customers that we serve every single day.”

Friday marks day five of the BCGEU’s strike with no end in sight. Wages continue to be the main sticking point between both sides.
