Local Tenant concerned for safety in housing complex

PRINCE GEORGE- A local BC housing tenant is concerned for her safety. She believes that some of the other occupants in her complex aren’t being put through the proper vetting before moving in.

“I believe this is happening because of the complex I reside in Prince George,” said Danielle Jewett. ” I do not feel safe because I don’t know who’s coming to visit the other occupants, what they’re into their lifestyles and what they’re bringing in, whether it be illicit, illegal drugs, weapons, various things like that.”

“We’ve heard struggles around the entire province, whether with BC housing or just, you know, in the rental market right across the province,” said Mike Bernier, the housing critic.

Struggles that could lead to relaxed rules.

“I will say that one of the struggles that we’ve seen over the last quite a few years, but really has highlighted the last few months,” says Bernier. “Also, some of the unfortunate things we’ve heard about, maybe some of the rules being a little lax.”

The housing critic believes this situation isn’t fair for anyone, whether it is a small family or someone in crisis.

“All of a sudden, somebody down the hall is somebody who’s suffering from mental health and addiction issues. And they have to share the same doors in the same home and hallways. And that can be a struggle. And that’s not fair. I would say to both people,” said Bernier.

CKPG News reached out to BC housing, who responded with the following information.

“Anyone can apply for affordable rental housing. However, housing providers may have specific requirements. For example, they may require that: you can live independently, You meet the Canadian residency requirements, You have a source of income, and You have names of references.”
