PRINCE GEORGE – The condolences are still flooding in for the Royal Family following the death of Queen Elizabeth. Locally, memories of the Queen visiting UNBC in August 1994 have created lasting memories.

Thousands of people turned out to the Prince George campus of the University of Northern B.C. to listen and get a glance at Queen Elizabeth. The Queen made her way through the new campus and officially opened Canada’s newest university.

In her two-minute speech, she acknowledged those involved in establishing a northern university and focused on the university’s attributes.

“The actual day was a brilliant, beautiful day. And I clearly remember her walking down the stairs just behind me, accompanied by our first chancellor, Angel Campanella, and also our first founding president, Jeff Weller. She was wearing a beautiful, bright yellow dress and, typical of royalty, a nice yellow hat.”

One of the Queen’s duties included unveiling a plaque commemorating the official opening of the main UNBC campus.
