Local gun owners not happy with handgun freeze

PRINCE GEORGE — On Friday, the federal freeze on buying and selling handguns is now in place. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the minister of public safety, Marco Mendicino made the announcement in Surrey.

Mendicino said that the reason the federal government made this decision will help curtail gun crime in Canada.

Cassy Premack, owner of KKS Tactical Supplies says the new measures will not help reduce violent crime in Canada. She says that the federal freeze also affects her business, as that source of income is taken away.

Premack also says that before the freeze was in place, Canada’s handgun laws did not allow everyday Canadians to have a handgun for personal use or protection and that handguns are only allowed to be used at a licensed gun range.

Sheldon Clare, former President of the National Firearms Association from 2010 to 2021, says that this new measure prevents people from engaging with sporting and cultural activities related to guns. Clare also mentioned that the government is essentially stealing people’s property through deferred confiscation.

While the freeze is in effect, Parliament still needs to approve accompanying measures, which could include an exemption on sport shooters buying handguns, and gun owners want the exemption expanded.
