PRINCE GEORGE – The Emergency SOS satellite system has been operating on the iPhone 14 Canada for a week. Outdoor experts welcome the new technology; however, they warn those wanting to use it to have a good understanding of how it works.

Apple just launched its revolutionary safety service. You can use your iPhone 14 to text emergency services by satellite connection without cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.

“The iPhone 14, now with their satellite communications that they’ve just put in place, is a huge asset for anybody but this with everything else. It shouldn’t be your only thing.”

Dave Merritt Search Manager, Prince George Search and Rescue

According to BC Adventure Smart, it’s critically important for those heading outdoors to maintain and understand all Emergency alerting devices.

According to Merritt, Search and Rescue teams can take hours to respond to a call at night or when the weather is poor.

Sandra Riches with BC Adventure smart says Emergency alerting devices are investments in your personnel preparedness, but that doesn’t mean you can go into the backcountry unprepared.

“So don’t let this special gear packed in your pack think that’s all you need. There’s much more to it. That’s just one of the steps.”

BC Adventure smart says completing a trip plan that outlines your destination is vital. The information in the plan can assist authorities in finding you.
