Pandemic passion leads to local artist launching first book

PRINCE GEORGE – When the pandemic started, Larry Merritt turned to painting. Over 500 paintings later, the local artist is now ready to release his first book featuring a collection of historic forestry paintings from Prince George and area.

“My son asked me one day, What are you going to, you know, how long are you going to do this? And I said, I don’t know until I get tired of it, I guess,” said Merritt. “That was three years ago.”

Merritt joked he is over 500 pictures into this pandemic project that has turned beyond expectation.

As part of this project, Merritt has set three goals. Using a local printer, sparking memories and conversation, and supporting charities.

Whether it’s a painting of an old sawmill or Giscome landmarks, Merritt is humbled to be able to breathe new life and a new conversation to memories often people forgot they even had.

A book signing will be held at the Elder Citizens Recreation Association downtown on December 8th and 9th with books for sale at local retailers in the months ahead.

If you have old pictures you think Merritt should paint and include in one of the books, you can reach out via Facebook.
