City Council to consider options for determining remuneration

Jan 14, 2023 | 12:00 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — On Monday (Jan. 16), City Council will consider a report from staff on determining remuneration. The report comes to council after the previous council deferred the decision prior to the October general election.

The discussion is not about giving the mayor and council a raise, but the framework of how those discussions should be confronted.

The options being presented to council are to continue with the current model, alter the list of peer cities in the current model, or establish a new method.

“(In the current model) a review of mayor and councillor remuneration, benefits, and expense reimbursement in comparison to peer municipalities shall be conducted by an advisory committee comprised of members of the public by the second quarter of the last year of each Council’s term,” reads the staff report.

The current communities that are used as a comparison includes Kamloops, Chilliwack, Kelowna, Saanich, and Victoria. The second option in front of council would be to review that list of communities.

“The intent would be to remove and/or replace one or more cities on the list with other cities that are more similar to the City of Prince George in terms of population, trends or challenges,” reads the report.

The final option for council to consider is implementing a complete new model.

“The second option presented is to amend the Council Remuneration Bylaw by removing the references to the advisory committee quadrennial review and peer municipalities and instead of forming that advisory committee, provide for automatic future annual adjustments to Mayor and Council remuneration,” continues the report.

If council approves one of the changes, city staff will return at a later date with a full report on the option.

The meeting begins at 6:00 pm on Monday at City Hall.
