Black History Month

Black History Month celebrated with a special beer

PRINCE GEORGE – Though many have Valentine’s Day circled on their calendars this month, February is important for another reason. It’s Black History Month, which offers a chance to honour the legacy of black Canadians, past and present.

For over 25 years, The College of New Caledonia has celebrated this month as a time to recognize the role of black people in our nation’s history.

In the last five years, Viola Desmond’s likeness has been printed on the Canadian ten-dollar bill to allow people of colour to remember their heritage and role in Canada’s History.

In honour of black history, Barkerville Brewing launched a new beer, Painless Jones Schwarzbier. William Allen Jones was the first black licensed dentist in Barkerville.

“In honour of William Alan Jones, who was the first dentist registered in B.C. and a black pioneer as well in Barkerville, where he practiced, he used modern techniques at the time to do painless dental extractions and treatments. The beer is a dark German lager, a Schwarzbier.”

Until the end of the month, the college will be hosting events around the community. If you are interested in sampling Painless Jones, it’s available at participating liquor stores and Barkerville Brewing in Quesnel.
