No word from Weber as tensions remain high between stakeholders and SD57 trustees

PRINCE GEORGE – Despite having a two-week spring break, there has been no break in the tension between stakeholder groups and school trustees on the School District 57 Board of Education.

“I’d say the mood is anxious,” said Daryl Beauregard, President of the PG District Teachers Association.

Laura Weller, Chair of the SD57 District Parent Advisory Council said many parents trust the staff but want to see more from board members including better context to recent decisions.

School trustees voted to dismiss Superintendent Cindy Heitman back on March 9 with the public finding out March 10. Since the news came out of Heitman being relieved of her duties Trustee Betty Bekkering and Trustee Gillian Burnett both handed in their resignations, both spoke to CKPG News of the lack of collaboration between sitting trustees and raised concerns about the governance.

CKPG News has made several requests for an interview with SD57 Board Chair Rachael Weber but has not received a response.

Acting Superintendent Pam Spooner is expected to host a media availability in the “coming weeks and days” according to an SD57 spokesperson.

Beauregard said he knows teachers are working hard in classrooms and will continue to do that despite decisions at a board level although he notes the longer this goes on, the harder recruitment and retention may become.

The next regular SD57 board meeting is scheduled for April 25.
