SPCA warns about pets being left inside hot vehicles

PRINCE GEORGE — With temperatures rising, humans are not the only ones feeling the change in the weather. In past years, B.C. SPCA received over a thousand calls about pets being left inside a vehicle during hot temperatures. This year might be no different with calls already coming in.

According to the SPCA, this kind of situation can be prevented by educating people and planning ahead before taking your pet out.

“Nobody plans to put their animal in danger in their car, but it happens anyway. It’s completely preventable. Think ahead on a hot day like this if you’re going somewhere,” said Dr. Alex Schare, regional manager of Animal Protection Services at SPCA.

He explained that temperatures inside a vehicle can get really high and really quick. According to him, the best solution is to not bring your pet if you will have to leave them inside the car. However, there are some steps people can take from preventing the animal to go under stress.

“Are any windows open? Is it in full sun? Is there water available for the animal, is the AC on? The ultimate last step would be to break the window and retrieve the animal. But, of course, it’s something that we try to avoid.”

To report an animal under stress, people can call B.C. SPCA Hotline at 1-855-622-7722 or access their website at www.spca.bc.ca for more information.
