Nursing Week to raise awareness about importance of front-line workers

PRINCE GEORGE — Nurses are a crucial piece in the health care system. With the nursing shortage at its peak right now, it has become hard to find new professionals for the job. However, Ryan Naldrett, a second-year nursing student at the College of New Caledonia, is an exception.

“”I feel that the hospital can be a very low place in a lot of people’s lives, and I want to be able to bring happiness and joy and maybe some humor into a place of where people are at the lowest,” he said.

According to Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond, one reason for the lack of new professionals is the low recognition.

“Nurses tell me that they feel undervalued and overworked, and so it’s hard to think about attracting people to a profession when they’re hearing those kinds of concerns. That’s one of the benefits of weeks like National Nursing Week, where we get to certainly celebrate the excellent work that nurses do. And frankly, they’re working so hard to hold the health care system together.”

Naldrett believes this is a great profession for those who like helping people, but it is not for everyone. He advises anyone who is thinking about getting into this field to do some research before hand.
