Leroy and Kylo: two labradors who changed a PG’s family for the better

PRINCE GEORGE – Leroy and Kylo are dog guides provided specifically for Izyk and Jasper: two brothers who have been diagnosed with autism. According to their mother Meggan Maurer, the dogs have made a huge difference in their lives.

“For Izyk, Leroy offers security because Izyk used to bolt. And what Leroy did was provide an anchor. So when we’re out in public and it’s really busy, we would tether Leroy to Izak. Kylo provides different comfort to him (Jasper), so he helps bring him out of a meltdown or escalate that emotional state”, said Maurer.

Both Leroy and Kylo were provided by Dog Guides of Canada, an organization that gives dogs at no cost to empower Canadians living with disabilities.

“These dogs provide a huge safety component and then, through that safety, they get that independence because they no longer have to rely on someone else for their safety,” explained Maria Galindo, the communications manager of Dog Guides of Canada.

Still according to Galindo, dog guides make a positive impact not only in that person’s life but also in the lives of everyone involved. For Maurer, they have helped her family sleep through the night.

“Right from Izyk’s birth, he never slept through the night. Not once. So for many years we didn’t get much sleep. And then Leroy comes home, and the first night Izyk slept through the night, it was kind of a miracle,” she said.

For over 40 years, Dog Guides of Canada has helped over 3,000 people. if you want support the cause or apply for a Dog Guide, you can find all the information at dogguides.com.
