Milligan Lake Wildfire listed as out of control

May 20, 2023 | 7:57 AM

VANDERHOOF B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service continues to respond to the Milligan Lake wildfire which is now classified as Out of Control. First detected on May 15, 2023, this incident is suspected to be lightning-caused and is currently estimated at 70 hectares in size.

“This fire is currently burning in M-1 fuel type (boreal mixed wood) and is exhibiting Rank 4 behaviour at the head and Rank 2 behaviour along the flanks. The change in status is a result of increased fire behaviour due to continued hot, dry conditions and local winds that exceeded forecasted maximum speeds. This created fire behaviour that spotted outside of existing containment lines, causing a small excursion in an easterly direction,” reads a release from the Wildfire Service.

Air tankers actioned the fire through the evening and tanker action has now been completed for the day. One unit crew is currently on scene and an additional unit crew is en route and will arrive today (May 20). There are additional aviation supports assigned to this incident. Heavy equipment will be working to establish new and strengthen existing containment lines.

A more complete assessment of the current wildfire situation and additional resources that may be required, and further operational updates, will be made available tomorrow afternoon.
