PRINCE GEORGE- After a brutal spring with plenty of heat and very little rain, wildfires are still ripping through the northern part of the province.

In the Prince George Fire Centre, there have been over 130 wildfires and more than 450 thousand Hectares burnt since April 1.

Looking ahead at the forecast, it isn’t promising. Highs of 30 degrees and more are expected heading into the weekend with very little rain.

One UNBC professor is voicing his concern. According to Dr. Stephen Déry, June is typically the wettest month of the year, making up for a dry May. That’s not the case so far.

“We’ve had no precipitation an accumulation at the airport or downtown yet in June,” said Déry. “There will be a concern for forest fires if this heat does persist into the next week or two.”

Heading into the summer, The message is to be prepared as a disaster can strike at any moment.

Anita DeDreu, The Emergency Services Coordinator for the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, says to have ready kits on standby.

“It’s really important that you plan and get all those important documents, like your passport, like your ID and any medical information, including prescriptions,” said DeDreu.

People are also encouraged to prepare for their pets in case of evacuation for the quickest possible exit.
