PRINCE GEORGE – As the temperatures rise and we experience longer sunny days, car enthusiasts have emerged from a long and cold winter, unveiling their vintage, collector, and custom specialty vehicles.

But as those vehicles hit the road, BC Highway Patrol reminds the public that those cars must meet road safety requirements.

Kevin Harms, a local car buff, was recently ticketed by police despite his car’s recent inspection.

Harms was told that his vehicle did not comply with the BC Motor Vehicle during the stop.

“ The vehicle was pulled over, apparently because it had no fenders and no mud flaps.”

RCMP say they performed a roadside inspection and determined his vehicle did not meet the parameters of an exemption under the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations.

“Standards are set by the province, and they go into all the different equipment that vehicles have to have equipped to be legal on the roadway.”

According to Harms, his vehicle has had several modifications already and is a product of its time period.

But RCMP says that some modifications can increase the risk of altering or negating the vehicle’s safety mechanisms.

Harms was given a $110 fine and plans to fight the ticket.

RCMP recommends those who own a modified vehicle have it inspected by a shop recognized by the province.
