PRINCE GEORGE – Despite record-breaking temperatures and it being one of the nicest evenings of the year, nearly 100 people still attended an all-candidates forum at Vanier Hall Thursday night for this month’s school district 57 by-election to fill two vacant seats vacated by two trustees who resigned earlier this year.

Nine of the ten candidates attended the forum at Vanier Hall Thursday evening, where they were read a list of ten surprise questions. One Prince George District Teachers Association representative liked some of what they heard.

“ There are definitely people on that stage that have experience. One, in particular, has eight years, I believe, as a trustee, and I think going into the conditions of the school board that we have now, I do think it’s important that we have people that are able to participate effectively in a governance system. “

Daryl Beauregard

President, Prince George District Teachers Association

At times the discussion kept returning to board transparency and Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity program, otherwise known as SOGI.

The PGTA and District Parent Advisory Council supplied the majority of the questions.

“There were definitely some questions that we prepared that had definite correct answers and incorrect answers. So we will be advising our account members as to which ones know their stuff so that they can have an informed idea of who to vote for.”

Laura Weller

Chairperson, District Parent Advisory Council

DPAC is encouraged by the number of candidates running for the two vacant seats.

Another advance poll takes place next Tuesday, with general voting day scheduled for Saturday, June 17th. The only candidate not to attend the forum was Heather McKenzie.
