PRINCE GEORGE — As summer time is just around the corner, many will heading outdoors to enjoy the nice weather, but a key part in staying healthy during the heat involves electrolytes, we learn more about electrolytes in this week’s to your health.

With the weather getting hotter, we are likely to get more de-hydrated as we spent lots of time outdoors in the heat, and electrolytes not only play a role in helping us stay hydrated, but are essential for basic life functioning.

“So the whole reason behind using electrolytes is to actually keep the cell hydrated. So there’s going to be things in electrolytes like sodium and potassium that actually help shuttle the water into the cell for the hydration. And then there’s other components such as magnesium, that is a muscle relaxant and calcium that is in charge of contractions. So when you’re actually getting the full spectrum of everything, you’re getting really good neurological function as well as muscle function.” – Cara Roberts, Active Body Nutrition

Now generally, when you might think of electrolytes, you might think of a product like Gatorade or Powerade or a product like Pedialyte which has less sugar.

“Gatorade is basically going to be sugar and it’s going to be salt. And that’s kind of a very basic way to hydrate your body and not the most effective. So when you’re using electrolyte powder or, say, a branch chain amino acid, which is even better, that’s going to have electrolytes in it. What you’re looking at is going to be no calories. You’re going to be looking at a good spectrum of a few different minerals that are going into your system for function and for people who become deficient in electrolytes.” – Cara Roberts, Active Body Nutrition

One thing that many of us may not know is the link between sweat and electrolytes.

“A lot of people don’t realize that Sweat is actually where we lose our electrolytes. And of course, with the heat increasing, being outdoors, being active is going to definitely impede that process and it’s going to make people more electrolyte deficient. And and we don’t know that something’s going on in our body until something goes wrong. So getting ahead of the game is always going to be very important and consuming the right amount throughout the day.” – Cara Roberts, Active Body Nutrition
