Concerns rise as homeless encampment fires threaten neighbourhood

PRINCE GEORGE – Moccasin Flats has become an area where several of Prince George’s homeless population have encamped. A bank of trees and bush divides the Moccasin Flats between a longtime established neighbourhood. CKPG spoke to a resident concerned with the number of fires within the encampment that may jump into the trees.

Lynn Bergmann and her neighbours in the Millar Addition remain on high alert, concerned about fires in the court-protected Lower Patricia encampment, where Bergmann said she’d seen an increase in fires.

“ One of our main concerns are the amount of fires that have been here. The last one that I know of was just on Wednesday when I was outside and I heard kind of two popping noises, which I presume were propane tanks and went out and had a look. And sure enough, there was a fire just opposite Gorse Street.”

The province recently issued a no open burning because of the hot, dry weather. Adding to the concern of nearby residents like Bergmann

City Counsellor Ron Polillo has heard from those living above Moccason Flats and is working on a solution that may alleviate some of their concerns.

“ I can say that we are working on it. And I think you’re going to hear something very soon of some added security measures. I mean, the one thing I can say, and you know, we discussed this at our public meeting a while back, is that we have budgeted for an extra two officers to patrol that area.”

According to the Prince George Fire Rescue, they walk through Moccasin Flats monthly, focusing on educating the residents about fire risks without extinguishing warming or cooking fires.
