Rescued magpie becomes big hit at Exploration Place

FantPRINCE GEORGE — There’s a lot of chatter at the Exploration Place about a very special bird.

Loki, the eight-year-old black-billed magpie has become a fan favourite just months into his tenure next to the entranceway.

“So they’re in the same family as crows ravens, starlings, those types of birds. They’re extremely smart. They have better memory recognition than most other birds,” said Head Keeper, Sabrina Paterson. “They can remember things for up to two years or longer, which is really impressive, for a lot of people who say bird brain, not realizing how smart some birds are. Loki is definitely super smart.”

The bird calls the centre home after being rescued when his family became victims of a dog attack. Now the popular piece chirps and mimics guests to the Exploration Place who walk by, and even performs some tricks including being able to open his food container to get his bug treat.

For the first time since the pandemic, summer camps are back at Exploration Place for kids of all ages. To sign up you can view the museum’s website.
