PRINCE GEORGE – Another protest happened on Saturday for those for and against SOGI – the main theme being, ‘Should sexual orientation and gender identity be taught in schools’. The anti-SOGI rally made their voices very apparent in front of School District 57 making it clear where they stand.

“Personally, I want SOGI ended, gone. And redo this.”

– Michelle Whitcomb, Anti SOGI Participant

Learning about the basics, such as math science and social studies is what many of the members of SOGI want their kids to focus on, not sexual orientation.

“Why is this being spoken to young children?”

“It’s totally inappropriate. It’s not necessary.”

The pro-SOGI rally was bigger while our camera was present with supporters preaching the importance of inclusivity.

“I will not negotiate human rights. We can talk about all sorts of other things, but when it comes to a matter of groups saying ‘you don’t get rights because of this,’ I can’t go there.”

Daryl Beauregard, Parent/President at Prince George District Teachers Association

According to an article written by ‘Community Commons,’ teaching and using inclusive language saves lives. So, by incorporating these teachings into schools, it promotes a more welcoming environment.

The Saskatchewan legislature just passed a bill preventing children under the age of 16 from changing their names or pronouns at school without receiving parental consent.
