Community members demand answers from RCMP regarding Brittany Jean Schram’s case

PRINCE GEORGE – A large demonstration outside of the Prince George RCMP detachment took place on Friday afternoon, as many community members demanded answers regarding the case of Brittany Jean Schram. Schram was announced deceased by the RCMP earlier this week, and RCMP say no criminality was involved. However, the community members gathered, which included Schram’s sister Jean Felix, say the RCMP’s investigation was unacceptable, as Felix says Schram’s case was not treated seriously and with the urgency it deserved.

“These are people’s family members … my sister was loved very, very much. And right from the beginning, we said this was out of character and nobody took it seriously. Nobody took the things that we were telling them seriously, and I believe the justice system has a huge gap,” Felix said.

“Police were not able to follow up on any tips or information that we were providing in a timely manner. Three months is a very long time and then for her to just show up out of the blue is not acceptable,” she continued.

Schram’s case is unfortunately an all too common story for the Indigenous community, who have been battling cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) for decades. This rally was raising awareness not only for Schram, but for all MMIW, as well as missing and murdered Indigenous men and children.

“I’ve been to a lot of MMIW and MMIP events like this. We can do our part and do these kinds of things, but who’s doing the actual work? Is there actual work being done for these familes? I’m not going to stop until I get my answers, that’s for sure.”

Felix added “it’s time to start having the real tough conversations,” as she says the justice system is broken and we need to address this.
