PRINCE GEORGE — A new survey from the Angus Reid Institute shows that one in three British Columbians are seriously considering leaving the province, citing a number of concerns including the cost of living and housing affordability.

The survey found that half of 18- to 34-year-olds and more than two-in-five 35- to 54-year-olds say they are seriously thinking of leaving the province because of the cost of housing.

In 2023, the province lost 8,000 more residents to other provinces than it gained, a net loss not seen since 2012.

In terms of housing, the survey found that those who would support the BC NDP in October are “more bullish about the government’s efforts, though still two-in-five (43%) say more is needed.” 53% said that the government is not focused enough on housing, while only 24% said that the government is giving housing affordability “the right amount of attention.”

Out of all the respondents, 66% said that cost of living/inflation, was a top issue. 52% said that health care was a top issue, 44% said that housing affordability was a top issue.

The survey also showed that 54% of respondents are not considering leaving B.C.
