Gender-based violence project gets million dollar boost from Province

NORTHERN B.C.—The Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation has provided $1 million in funding for community-led supports of Indigenous women and girls through the Giving Voice Project.

Women, girls and gender-diverse people are targeted by gender-based violence at a disproportionate rate and Indigenous women are at an even high risk, being four time more likely to experience gender-based violence.

Under the Giving Voice, a funding initiative led by The Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation’s Advisory Council on Indigenous Women (MACIW), eight organization in Northern B.C. will receive as much as $30,000 each to provide community-driven healing projects. The goal is to inspire, change, and give voice to issues of violence in Indigenous women’s lives.

“Gender-based violence disproportionately affects Indigenous women and girls in communities across the province,” said Barb Ward-Burkitt, chair of MACIW. “This latest round of Giving Voice funding is supporting meaningful initiatives that foster healing and promote safety for Indigenous women and girls, and empower change at a community level.”

Some of the communities that will be receiving the funding are:

  • Lake Babine Nation with Team Gooze, an emergency-response team in the area.
  • Chetwynd’s Linda Krystina Housing Society
  • Old Massett Village Council will support it’s women’s council, allowing a safe space for women to share their experience.
