PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George Fire Rescue responded to a series of structure fires at Moccasin Flats early Thursday morning (Sept.19).

Crews arrived on scene at approximately 1 a.m. to find three tiny homes and one travel trailer partially involved in fire.

“Crews used handlines and a master stream to quickly extinguish these fires. A search of each of these structures was performed and no occupants were found,” says the City.

Brad Gustafson is on of the community members who spearheaded the building of these homes. He says that he’s unsurprised that they burnt down adding they accomplished what they set out to do.

“It accomplished, an immediate short term solution for the very pressing need of needing shelters in the middle of last winter. It accomplished, the fact that it drew attention to the complexity of the problem,” says Gustafson. “It accomplished kind of lighting a fire under city council a little bit. The Atco are a result of that, at least partially. It accomplished, a lot of dialog on all levels of government and it helped to force them to put all their heads together and begin to really start trying to address the issue.”

Damages are estimated at $4,000 and the cause of the fires remain under investigation.
