PRINCE GEORGE – The 33rd annual Prince George Take Back the Night March is taking place on September 20. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., this march is focused on ending violence against women.

“The march really is to honour all women who we’ve lost at the hands of violence, women who continue to experience violence, and women who’ve overcome it. It’s a time to come together in solidarity, to stand up, speak up about violence against women and the need to end it,” said Kyla-Rae Laferdy, a march organizer and team leader at Phoenix Transition Society.

While the march used to be exclusively for women and children, Laferdy says this year all community members are invited, as Laferdy says ending violence against women takes everyone, including men.

“Often women face these experiences alone in isolation, so even if they can’t be at the march, knowing that there are people taking a stand and speaking up provides the strength or capacity for women to feel that they can to speak up about their experiences,” Laferdy said.

“(It’s important) to stand together, to show community, to show the world that violence against women should not be tolerated in any capacity,” she continued.

Laferdy adds violence against women unfortunately remains a huge issue, and the amount of women it impacts needs to be considerably lowered to make the streets and homes safe for women.

“If we haven’t experienced violence ourselves, at this rate and the world we live in today, we know somebody who has. So my gratitude goes out to everybody who is able to come and participate and take a stand,” she said.
