QUESNEL — A 30-year-old man that Quesnel RCMP say is a repeat offender has been arrested.

It follows a pursuit that began at approximately 9 p.m. Wednesday (Oct.2) night following a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Spears Road and Heinzleman Road in Quesnel.

“Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop with the suspect vehicle which fled at a high rate of speed nearly striking two police vehicles,” says Sgt. Clay Kronebusch. “Due to concerns for public safety the police did not pursue the vehicle but were able to maintain sight of the suspect vehicle.”

He says the man was identified as the suspect from a break-and-enter from the night before. A second attempt was made to stop the suspect near Northstar Road and Highway 97, but the vehicle was able to avoid the road block and fled again, travelling south on Highway 97.

RCMP finally arrested the suspect after the vehicle he was driving in collided with another vehicle near Maple Drive and Highway 97. The driver fled on foot but was arrested a short time later.

Police say the driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries while the suspect remains in custody with a court date set for Thursday (Oct.3).

“These types of incidents can cause a significant risk to the public,” says Kronebusch. “The suspect driver of this vehicle showed no regard for the safety of others on the roads.”
