Cougars nearly back to full strength amidst midweek doubleheader

PRINCE GEORGE— The Cougars wrapped up a tough five-game road trip and returned home with a big change on the roster earlier this week. Koehn Ziemmer was sent back from LA Kings training camp and in turn the team made the difficult decision to trade their leading scorer Carlin Dezainde to the Swift Current Broncos.

In his season debut, Ziemmer produced three points including a last minute tying goal to send the game to overtime.

“He’s a real good goal scorer. (He’s) been around here, really familiar with his game and he’s a top player in this league,” said Head Coach and GM Mark Lamb on the injection of Ziemmer to the roster.

While Ziemmer had a big night individually, the Cougars dropped their second straight against the Portland Winterhawks, courtesy of a Diego Buttazzoni overtime tally.

“We need some practices and need to create some chemistry with guys going onto different lines. Even though you’re familiar with all these players, it’s still a reset, a new year and everything’s a little bit different,” said Lamb on the difficulties off assimilating players back from NHL Camps.

Along with trying to reintegrate players into the roster, the team has faced the challenge of playing seven games in less than two weekes, including their five-game road trip.

“It can certainly test you. The schedule is the schedule and there’s adversity throughout the year. To have this right at the start of the year, I welcome it and I think our players need to, ” said Lamb on the Cats grueling early season slate.

They’ll hope to snap a two-game winless streak and wrap up their three-game mini series against the Portland Winterhawks tonight at the CN Centre.
