PRINCE GEORGE— The UNBC basketball teams wrapped up their opening weekend of the 2024-25 season with their home openers. This would mark the first games played on the new Brownridge Court at the Northern Sport Centre.

The women’s team kicked off the double header, and despite some first half adversity, the teams defense shined in quarters three and four to get them past the TRU WolfPack 61-51 for their first win of the season.

“We came out super hot. We were excited. We were ready to go, and then we just missed a few shots and it took a little bit of resilience. But we said beforehand that there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs this game, and we need to be mentally prepared for that and we pushed through,” said veteran guard Sarah Kuklisin on the victory.

The game also marked the first start at the Northern Sport Centre for hometown athlete Sophia Fuller.

“It’s a really cool experience. I grew up watching them, I used to see everyone and I used to be like, oh my god, I wanted to be here. Now I am here and it’s kind of scary, but it’s really cool,” said the Prince George native.

The men’s team followed up the women’s victory for their highly anticipated home opener after their incredible playoff run for bronze last season. Although they pushed the WolfPack to overtime, the Twolves fell to 0-2 on the season, losing 88-85.

Evgeny Baukin led UNBC with 22 points, sophomore Chris Ainsley was on fire from three hitting five of six for 17 points and Justin Sunga dropped 14 points and six assists in the losing effort.

Both teams head to Victoria next weekend for a back-to-back with the Vikes.
