PRINCE GEORGE— As we head towards the shortest day of the year it may be harder to get enough sun. According, to Statistics Canada the amount of Canadians who don’t get enough Vitamin D double during the Winter. While, some foods can provide a source of Vitamin D, supplements are also available.

Brianna Pallot, a pharmacist at Third Avenue Pharmacy, says that vitamin D is important for bone health as it helps our body utilize calcium. Without it you are more at risk for fractures, especially as you age.

“Elderly people, we want them to get a higher dose of vitamin because they just produce, less when exposed to sunlight,’ explains

If you believe you are vitamin D deficient, speak to your doctor.

“The sort of dose that you need supplement wise is going to vary based on gender and age,” says Pallot. “So, it’s always good to check with a health care professional.”
