RCMP and ICBC remind public of the dangers of storing items in your vehicle

PRINCE GEORGE—The Prince George RCMP Traffic Safety and Community Policing officers, in partnership with ICBC and the RCMP Patrol Volunteers, are reminding everyone to ensure they don’t leave any potential theft items in their vehicle during the holidays.

As part of this reminder organizers held a “Spot the Target” event on November 16 at Pine Centre Mall. Participants were encouraged to look inside a parked car and identify potential “targets” that may tempt thieves to break into a vehicle.

“These events are aimed at getting drivers to think about what they are leaving in their vehicle when they park it and walk away. As we get into the Christmas and winter seasons, where we often have more gear in our cars than usual, this becomes a tempting target for thieves. Items such as Christmas presents, ski or snowboard gear, and warm winter clothing are all high-value items that we’re asking people to think twice about before leaving behind,” states Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.

ICBC and RCMP warn against leaving any property visible in their vehicle as they say thieves will break in for as little as a few coins or a cigarette lighter. Typical items stolen from vehicles include purses, wallets, credit cards, cash, clothing and sunglasses. They add that if you leave any items in your vehicle, try moving them to the trunk or another place that’s not visible to prying eyes. This includes when your vehicle is parked in your driveway or carport.
