PRINCE GEORGE— The U18 AAA Cariboo Cougars are less than a week away from their 11th annual Pink in the Rink fundraiser game.

The game was first played in 2014 when sponsors, the Taba Group, a Fort St. James mining/forestry company started it up. They remain sponsors for the event along with the Rick Fudger Family.

“It’s geared towards cancer awareness. everyone’s been touched by it, so we like to do our part. We wear pink jerseys and we call it pink in the rink and everyone can wear pink to the rink. We have a big sponsor and some money going towards the 50/50,” said Cariboo Cougars Head Coach Tyler Brough on the event.

Proceeds from their 50/50 draw will go to the Kordyban Lodge, which provides food and lodging for people and their families while they receive treatment at the adjacent B.C. Cancer Centre for the North.

The players also understand how important this fundraiser is as well as how they are looked up at as role models in the community.

“It’s good to show support and show those people that they’re not alone in their battle and show that we are all with them. Raising money for research and making sure they do their best to try to find a cure for those for those people fighting,” said goaltender Andrik Lygas.

“There’s lots of little kids and younger players that look up to our team, and anytime you can kind of set a guideline for them to follow it’s great,” said forward Grady Gustafson. “There’s a lot of people affected by cancer and it’s great that we can raise some money and do our part to help out with the cause.”

Pink in the Rink will be at Kin Centre one on November 30 at 6:30 PM, with the Greater Vancouver Canadians in town as the Cariboo Cougars opponents.

The team will be the top on ice attraction in Prince George that night, as both the WHL Cougars and the Spruce Kings are scheduled to play on the road.
