Milan Pasquale making a name for himself on the court at UNBC

PRINCE GEORGE— UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team added Milan Pasquale this offseason. Not only was the freshman a back-to-back MVP of the Vancouver Island AA Championships, but his family roots are strong in Canadian basketball history.

Milan’s uncle Eli Pasquale and dad Vito, were a big part of the UVic Vikes 1980s dynasty, with Eli becoming a two-time olympian and Canadian basketball legend. The now UNBC Timberwolf has been well aware of his family’s accomplishments for a long time now.

“I was told very early. I was told maybe at age five. Then I started learning more, I started watching their old game tapes. It’s a lot of family heritage. A lot of basketball,” said Pasquale on his deep Canadian basketball roots.

Coincidentally, longtime men’s basketball coach at UNBC, Todd Jordan, also has a connection to the UVIC Vikes ’80s dynasty.

“I’m quite close with Ken Shields (the former coach at UVic) who coached Milan’s uncle and his dad. Ken’s a legendary coach in our country. He’s coached our national team and won whole lot of national titles with UVic,” said Head Coach Todd Jordan on his relationship with Ken Shields.

Shields led the Vikes to seven straight U Sports Championships (1980-1986), with many of those coming with the Pasquale brothers on the court.

“It’s a really cool connection that has kind of come around full circle. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the reason we recruited Milan. We recruited Milan based on just his basketball performance as a high school player and things like that,” said Jordan.

While bringing Milan to UNBC had nothing to do with Jordan’s relationship with Shields, the freshman’s first bucket seemed like it was meant to be. The Mill Bay native, scored his first Canada West points with his family and friends in attendance against the Vikes in Victoria.
