PRINCE GEORGE— On Saturday, Harwin Elementary School hosted their first ever Indigenous Holiday Market to showcase around 30 indigenous vendors in the school gym.

A big driving force in making this market happen was the communities response at an earlier event from the school.

“We actually hosted our first indigenous fashion show a couple months ago here. We had a little vendor spot showcasing some of the local artists in Prince George and we actually sold out at that event. We ran out of space for a lot of our vendors,” said Larissa Montgomery, an indigenous education worker at the school.

This got the ball rolling for the Indigenous Christmas Market which brought out plenty of unique local indigenous artists.

“I love seeing all the faces, everyone’s faces lighting up, seeing everyone’s creations. They (the community) get to see how how talented people are around here,” said Evelina Campbell-Alexander, the owner of Braids Over Fades.

As well as promoting the vendors, the school was accepting perishable and non-perishable food items to support the local Harwin families in need during the holiday season.

“Harwin is an excellent school. They’re very in touch with the culture and community of Prince George,” said Jesse Maurice, the owner and designer of Tribe North.

After a very succesful inaugural market, Montgomery hopes this can become an annual event to continue to support local artists and collect donations for a good cause.
