BC SPCA ready to protect Prince George’s animals in 2025

PRINCE GEORGE—Speaking for those who can’t speak for themselves. The BC SPCA’s Animal Protection Service is gearing up to protect Prince George’s pets in 2025

Dr. Alex Schare, regional manager of animal protection services, says that last year saw 250 reports of animals in distress in Prince George, ranging from abuse to a lack of veterinary access. Dr. Schare adds while that number is around the same every year, it’s still way too high.

“We would definitely encourage people to call us if they have concerns about an animal’s welfare,” says Dr. Schare. “Certain things are very clear cut. Physical abuse is a clear cut example when there people should be calling us because there are no excuses for that. But also, if you have concerns for welfare, could be the housing conditions of an animal, lack of food and water, or lack of veterinary care. Feel free to give us a call and one of our officers can investigate.”

When the protection service officers are on the case, it begins with an education session. If they see no improvement from the animals owners the service can escalate to removing the animal and recommending charges to crown council.

You can report an animal in distress to the BC SPCA Animal Helpline: 1-855-622-7722.
