PRINCE GEORGE— The Prince George Airport Authority (PGAA) has joined the #NotInMyCity human trafficking awareness program. Alongside staff training for the warning signs of human trafficking, yellow roses will be placed around YXS.

“The yellow flower is a symbol of hope. For those affected by human trafficking, it was developed by a Canadian designer as part of the #NotInMyCity program,” says Sabrina Angus, interim Ceo and President for PGAA. “It signifies, as an airport, that there is help available to those who need it.”

According to Public Safety Canada, human trafficking is when a perpetrator recruits, moves, or holds victims to exploit them for profit, usually for sexual reasons or forced labour. 93 per cent of human trafficking victims are women and girls and mayor Simon Yu says its happening right here in Prince George.

“Due to various immigration policy changes, foreign students when they first came here, they might try to get to work,” explains Yu. “And they run into criminals, and they might just use the situation and transport them around like human cargoes”

Alongside the program, Mayor Yu will be meeting with other mayors across the province to discuss border security with the goal of stopping trafficking between towns.

If you feel you might be being trafficked reach out to the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-833-900-1010. You can also call your local police.
