Hit-and-run victim succumbs to injuries

PRINCE GEORGE — One of the victims of Monday’s hit-and-run on North Ospika Boulevard and McRae Avenue has succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

Prince George RCMP say his name was Shane Kelly and he was a community rider. The other rider, an RCMP officer, was also injured.

RCMP say Shane was a proud supporter of the Cops for Cancer Tour de North ride and had previously supported other Canadian Cancer Society fundraising events such as Relay for Life. He also participated in fundraisers for other cancer-related charities including Wheeling Warriors and Tour de Cure.

“We are all heartbroken by this news. Shane was a caring and enthusiastic team builder from the very beginning, offering comradery, encouragement and support to the entire Tour de North team. He was driven by a deep commitment to making a difference for children with cancer. Shane’s teammates are devastated by the loss of one of their own, in such tragic circumstances. We offer our sincere condolences and unwavering support to Shane’s family and friends,” states Laura Nelson, Manager, Cops for Cancer, Canadian Cancer Society.

This investigation remains ongoing. Police officers are still looking to speak with any witnesses to the incident or to anyone in the immediate area of where the incident occurred who may have video surveillance, dash camera footage or cell phone video of the vehicle’s driving behaviour before and after the event. “Shane’s family is taking time to grieve privately and has requested space during this difficult period. If you would like to share your condolences or well-wishes, they can be brought to the Prince George RCMP Detachment at 455 Victoria Street. Messages will be gathered and passed along to the family when they are ready to receive them. Your kindness and support are greatly appreciated,” states Corporal Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.

In a statement released by the City of Prince George, Mayor Simon Yu expressed his “profound sadness,” and “deepest condolences” to Shane’s family, friends, and loved ones.

Yu noted that the tragedy has “deeply impacted our community, especially given the selfless and courageous purpose behind his participation” in the Cops for Cancer Tour de North fundraising ride.

Garry Begg, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, also weighed in, saying he too is deeply saddened by Shane’s passing.

“Volunteers like Shane and police officers continue to find ways to serve their communities, whether protecting people from violence, giving back or standing up for those in need. This incident is a stark reminder of the risks they face and the strength they demonstrate.

“We stand with the Prince George RCMP, the victims and their families, and the Tour de North team in the face of this senseless act.”
