PRINCE GEORGE – July 11 is finally the day that the sports begin for the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games. After a fantastic Opening Ceremony that welcomed the athletes to the community, the 1200 athletes from across the province have been competing at the city’s many facilities.

“It’s very exciting, the energy’s on a new high. So many new faces, many friends, everyone’s having a good time,” said Region 8 Bocce Head Coach Waylon Becker.

“It’s really exciting and nervous, cheering on all the athletes, wishing them the best. Hopefully they get gold, silver and bronze, wishing them all the best,” said Region 7 Swimmer Kaylee Richter.

“I’m cheering all the regions on. I love cheering others on,” added Region 4 Swimmer Libby Hansen.

July 11 and 12 will see a wide variety of sports take place, including but not limited to:

  • Bocce
  • Swimming
  • Basketball
  • Bowling
  • Rhythmic Gymnastics
  • Track and Field

“It’s been great, just competing against different teams,” said Region 8 Bocce Player Tara Chiasson.

“It’s good just being together, making new friends,” added fellow Region 8 Bocce Player Adrian Rosen.

The athletes have certainly enjoyed the thrill of competition, alongside meeting new people, and cheering them on is hundreds of supporters all across the city. The support of these fans has been a huge boost for the athletes, who really enjoy the chance to showcase their skills.

“What it means to me, being with supporters, is lifting each other up. It also helps me have a great game out there and do my very best,” Hansen said.

“I think it’s good motivation to swim faster and if you cheer them on, they’ll swim faster. And if you hear one voice and if you yell fast enough they’ll probably hear you and they’ll probably just go,” Richter said.

“It’s extremely important. The athletes, coaches, volunteers are all kind of on this new energy, this high. Everyone’s having a great time,” Becker added.

The provincial games will conclude tomorrow, and if you would like to attend any events you can find the full schedule here.
