Labour Day Parade set for Monday

PRINCE GEORGE – Labour unrest has been front and centre recently. CN workers went on strike last August. A strike involving postal workers was launched just before Christmas last year and of course, Air Canada attendants earlier this month.

“For the federal government to step in and say, ‘Hey, you know what? You can’t make a deal on the table. Get back to work right now. And then we’ll put it into binding arbitration.’ That’s not bargaining in good faith,” says Matt Baker, President of the North Central Labour Council.

The labour movement gained a head of steam in Canada in 1919, with the Winnipeg General Strike. It was a six-week-long city-wide strike that involved over 30,000 workers striking for better wages and working conditions after World War I.

“Labour Day is important because we need to make sure that we are remembering what our grandfathers, our grandparents and everybody did back in the day to make sure that we have the rights we do have today,” says Chris Mansel, Chair of the Organizing Committee.
